DiggyDiggy is a game I developed for the Playdate console, a unique bit of game hardware featuring an analogue crank as an input device.

I chose to develop a game for this console because I am interested in the designs non-standard inputs can lead to. I also wanted to challenge myself to create something for hardware that featured similar limitations to older consoles such as the Atari 2600.

How to play if you do not own a Playdate

  1. Download the Playdate SDL from https://play.date/dev/
  2. Install Playdate SDK
  3. Open Playdate simulator and register it.
  4. Download the game from itch.io page and extract it.
  5. Drag and drop it into the Playdate simulator Window.

Have fun!

great effort here! this game definitely achieves the retro feel and makes fun and sensible use of the crank

a couple little tweaks would make this even better

gameplay is good and I don’t have any suggestions! the controls are where I feel improvements could be made.

crank input doesn’t seem to scale up when turned faster. this really limits the feeling of responsiveness when playing. also, when decending to a new screen, the crank input seems to reverse momentarily and pull you back up to the previous screen. this can be very frustrating

i’m convinced this game could be super appealing if you finesse the crank controls a bit

thanks!
