Holler up high
A downloadable game for Windows
Hello, welcome to my GMTK 2024 (built to scale) submission this is Holler on high. An infinite runner where you use your microphone to inflate your balloon to float upwards.
Microphone
I had even less than the usual 48 hours to make this game so I decided to keep things simple with a tried and true genre opting to experiment with the games control method which is how I landed on the microphone.
I had a tone of fun working on this game and am really happy I finally get to publish a alt/ hacked control game (Game Design Beyond Screens and Joysticks). A lot of time was spent tweaking the microphone input to make it responsive and intuitive. A lot of work still needs to be done but at the very least it should be playable no matter what audio input set up you have (probably, maybe, potentially... (´。_。`)). Gonna see if I can't get a a method of calibrating the microphone input sensitivity... Let me know if future me managed it....
Playtesting
It goes without saying that playtesting was a massive part the games development. While the game is quite simple playtesting revealed a tone of little oversights I made. Such as short reaction times to obstacles due to the camera being cantered on the player, and the mic input not being sensitive enough (turns out I am a very loud person)... Also it has just be really funny watching playtesting holler random stuff into the microphone.
Hard mode
Err... maybe try putting your favourite song on loud speaker by your microphone? hold on let me try it... Ok that is like impossible... Hell yeah free hard mode!
Conclusion
Ok I'll shut up now, I really hope anyone who plays it enjoys it, can't wait to hear how broken and unplayable the game is on any other microphone set up than my own. Its been a great jam! Can't wait to try out other peoples game!
